SEO is ever-changing and one of the changes SEO has gone through is its stress on inbound link building. Many SEO firms that promote link building services are actually promoting a dis-service because they use outdated link building strategies. Outdated  strategies could actually sabotage your SEO rankings. Search Engines give higher priority to “natural link structure”.  Natural links make use of varied text linking strategies that add build links over time.

Link Popularity has been redefined.  It used to be that the more inbound links coming into your site, the better – regardless of the quality of those links. Those were the days that quantity, instead of quality, mattered and during the time when link farms worked.

For today’s SEO, however, you want to get quality, relevant inbound links that prove your website’s importance within the industry. The only way to do this is to get links from other “important” (or highly relevant) sites. The more links from important, trusted sites, the better. Link dilution must be avoided. Link dilution occurs when your inbound link comes from a page that has numerous links to other websites.

Extensive keyword research is still very important. Keywords are still the foundation of any SEO strategy, including inbound link building. Keywords must be used in link anchor text, and used consistently on pages to which inbound links are referred.  If sufficient keyword research is not completed, you’ll experience inefficient inbound link building.

Inbound links must go deep into your site. Search engines prefer to give higher rankings to sites that have inbound links referring to multiple pages within your site – not just your home page. And, the keywords used for your on-page optimization must be in agreement with the keywords used in the inbound link anchor text.

Reciprocal linking has lost its power.  Reciprocal links are those links that you swap with other website owners in order to build links. This is an outdated, ineffective strategy that Awareness Creation does not use. It‘s acceptable to use a few relevant, reciprocal links but this is typically a tactic recommended by “SEO firms” that are not using up-to-date SEO tactics.

On-Page Optimization is necessary even for link building.  If the page to which your inbound links are referred is not optimized and in alignment with your off-page optimization, your SEO strategy could be compromised.
